The key to any marketing plan is knowing your audience. So to create an effective plan, you will need to determine your target audience.

Some of the characteristics that make up your target audience include age, location, income and lifestyle. When you begin researching the characteristics of your target audience, you should do some research on the area where you plan on starting a practice to make sure the demographic exists. You would not want to open a practice focused on pediatrics in an area of the city with a dense population of retirees. Use data collected from an annual census or sites like Claritas or esri to find lifestyle and other demographic information.

If you are purchasing a practice or associating, look at your current patients and see if there are any similarities.
